ABOUT

Passionate about Asia for as long as I can remember, and above all about life, I completed most of my university studies in China, first studying history and classical literature, then earning a master's degree in screenwriting and dramaturgy from the art department of Wuhan University. There I discovered the great playwrights of classical Chinese theater and Peking Opera, as well as the great modern Chinese writers. Discovering and intimately experiencing this other pole of human experience allowed me to revisit my own vision of the world, drawing on a way of thinking that was entirely new to me at the time. Alongside these studies, I began writing and directing short films. I later had the chance to work as assistant director, cinematographer, editor and even producer on documentary films, including several feature-length theatrical documentaries by director Chen Song (陈颂); from then on, my love of cinema, and especially of documentary cinema, never left me.

After these years of experience in China, I decided to return to France to devote myself to film and artistic collaboration between France and Asia. I was fortunate to work as executive producer in charge of Asian projects at the French animation studio Knightworks, a studio that has worked with creators such as Alejandro Jodorowsky and Sylvain Chomet. It was an extremely enriching experience that allowed me to work on a wide variety of projects.

I then directed my first feature-length documentary, a portrait of the French-Japanese sculptor Tetsuo Harada. This French-Japanese co-production went through many twists and turns and took three years of hard work, but the film was completed in August 2020 and released in French cinemas in February 2022.

Following this project, I decided to bring to life a project I had been developing since 2015: a documentary inspired by my experience in Asia and built from many images of everyday life in China, Korea and Japan filmed between 2015 and 2019, in the same spirit as Chris Marker's Sans Soleil. It is not a classic documentary, but rather a cinematic essay on the question of the soul, a filmic poem about an initiatory quest for identity, a film about the usefulness of the useless and the union of the real and the imaginary, a work about the universal bond, that fine thread that ties human sensibilities together.
